Handmade pottery studio
From clay, a piece is born
At Arcilla we never rush the clay. We listen to it, and let it take shape in our hands and in the slow heat of the kiln, until it becomes a piece that lives with you. Our kiln is open to your pieces too.
01 Clay
Everything begins with the earth
A handful of raw clay, fine as dust, with no shape and no name yet. Every piece we make starts in that silence.
02 Water and wedging
Water wakes the clay
Drop by drop the clay softens, then we knead it by hand for a long time until every bubble of air is gone. A good piece begins with honest clay.
03 On the wheel
Where hands learn patience
The wheel turns, and two hands hold the clay, center it, open it and slowly raise its wall. The belly swells, the neck narrows, and the piece appears as if it had been waiting in the clay all along.
04 The stamp
The mark of authenticity
Before the clay dries, we turn the piece over and press the Arcilla stamp into its base. A small mark in a place the eye rarely looks, and the proof that this piece was made by hand in our studio: an original, not a factory copy.
05 Drying
Waiting is part of the craft
The piece rests for days in the studio air. Its clay dries slowly, its color pales and it grows light. We never hurry it: here, haste means a crack that cannot be mended.
06 First firing
Into the heart of the fire
Into the kiln it goes, and the heat climbs hour after hour until clay becomes ceramic. A change with no way back: what went in as clay comes out as stone that rings under your fingers.
07 Painting
Patterns from our memory
With a fine brush we paint patterns drawn from our culture and heritage: the triangles, lines and warm colors of old house walls, doors and weavings, circling the piece the way our stories do.
08 Glazing
A coat that hides, to reveal
We dip the piece in liquid glaze and the colors vanish under a chalky white film. It looks as if everything is lost, but the fire knows what it is doing.
09 Second firing
The fire tells the secret
Back in the kiln, the glaze melts into clear, glossy glass, and the colors return brighter than before, sealed under a coat that protects them.
From clay to your hands
A piece that has passed through water, fire and patient hands, carries our stamp on its base, and is like no other.
